Sweet Pie at Kyanja mall may look dull and uninspiring on first impressions, more so with their only two (waiter and cashier) visible staff and tightly guarded kitchen, but the food comes fast and tastes unique.
The lone waiter is impressively informed about the menu categorized under chicken corner, fish corner, vegetable, and beef corner. He will inform you with precision the exact amount of time in which your food will be delivered. The honey garlic wings are not as tasty as they look. On the other hand, the grilled tilapia fish fillet tastes better than it looks.
It is served with either chips, wedges, rice or mashed potatoes. It is well-seasoned with charred crispy edges while the flaky middle meats are bursting with fulsome, savoury flavours.
You won’t smell the fishiness in this fish but you will truly taste it in your mouth once it starts to melt away. There are hardly any oils and if any, it was natural oil that was used.
Although my preference had been to pair it with mashed potatoes, substituting it with rice due to the preparation duration was not a bad idea either. The butter sauce, though looking bland, helped bridge the rice and the fillet.
In fact, I wanted more of the portions that had initially looked too much. The side lemon slice adds to the tanginess of the fillet while the black pepper boldens the flavours even more.
The side, half-cooked sweet vegetables of bell peppers and lettuce topped off this wonderful meal. It still appears expensive though at Shs 27,000 (one of cheapest meals on the menu) but given the location and ambience of the restaurant, the prices are expected.
