It is almost an injustice that Jinja-based Sikia Cafe along Gabula road is best known for its ever-smiling deaf and HoH (hard of hearing) staff.
Their usually tasty food never gets the rightful recognition. As a not-so-so-regular diner here, I can vouch for their awesome, well-drained chips and grilled full-size tilapia – fresh from river Nile, and the luwombo (sauce steamed in banana leaves and served with local foods).
While the travelling diners usually opt for the full-course dine-in meals, local diners seem to be regulars at the ice cream and confectionary booth situated at the entrance of the cafe.
Of course, some diners (even locals) still walk in and are oblivious to the deaf staff – shouting out orders and instructions and asking “are you deaf?” to the smiling staff, who, you would suspect by now take no offence as they politely point to you the ‘I’m deaf ’ signage at the entrance (of course there are talking staff who will emerge from the background if need be).
A single scoop of ice cream is Shs 4,000, raising to Shs 8,000 if you add the sweet-smelling and nutty crunchy waffles.
With more than 11 flavours including mango, mint, pina colada, coffee, banana split etc, one can get to experience the unusual beyond Uganda’s default strawberry, vanilla and chocolate flavourings.
The ice cream is extremely creamy and milky with outstanding high dessert pitches and notes. What a beautiful everlasting aftertaste it gives!
On any hot afternoon, try out a scoop of pina colada and a scoop of mango on the side. These will leave you wanting more and pondering why the other ice cream-making pretenders don’t come to benchmark here.
