The SAG-AFTRA strike is over a hundred days old right now and from the look of things, Hollywood won’t resume operations anytime soon.
The Actors Guild is currently in negotiations with Studios. However, according to online resources, the AMPTP (Producer’s Guild) will push negotiations into 2024 unless they reach a deal with the Actor’s Guild in the next seven days.
What does that mean for consumers like you? Reality TV is about to dominate your future. Hollywood turns to reality shows during periods like this because they don’t rely on union actors and writers. They are essentially immune to the SAG strike. I was tempted to list the best reality shows on TV today, but that would be disingenuous of me because I don’t like reality TV.
So, instead, I will talk about the most interesting reality shows you may want to check out if you like this genre. First, if game shows are your jam, give Japan a shot. But be warned. Some of Japan’s game shows are so bizarre you won’t believe they exist until you watch them.
Take Candy or Not Candy, in which contestants bite random objects to determine whether they are candy or not. If Candy or Not Candy seems a little tame, what about Be Cute or Get Pie? It starts with female contestants pretending to sleep on mattresses on the floor.
Then, they each take turns impressing the judges by waking in the cutest way possible. Those whose cuteness is found wanting take a pie to the face. Let’s talk about The Bum Game. You know how some dating shows hide the female contestants behind a screen, and the male contestants must select a woman based solely on their voice?
In The Bum Game, female models stick their nude behinds in holes in a wall for the male contestant and the audience to look at!
The man cannot see the models. However, he can touch and even kiss their bums before making a choice. I have seen varying descriptions of this game show. But they all involve a group of bums in holes for men to grope. Make of that what you will.
If you don’t have the stomach for Japan’s wacky sense of humor, Hollywood is only slightly better. Have you heard of Milf Manor? Allow me to ruin your day.
In Milf Manor, eight single women aged 40 to 60 congregate at a Mexican villa hoping to secure a romantic relationship with one of eight (much younger) men. But, so what? Am I saying 60-year-old women are forbidden from finding love with attractive 25-year-old men?
What is so disturbing about Milf Manor?
The eight male contestants are the sons of the female contestants. Surprisingly, that is not even the biggest twist. The women don’t know their sons are part of the challenge, at least not initially. In one episode, the women are blindfolded and told to identify their offspring by touching their shirtless torso.
Once again, I will give you a moment to ponder what I just said. You are better off watching The Golden Bachelor, which technically follows the same formula as every spinoff of The Bachelor you have ever watched.
But instead of a young corporate bachelor looking for love from a harem of equally young and attractive women, the male contestant is a 71-year-old man picking from a pool of 65-year-old women. I don’t know why, but The Golden Bachelor feels wholesome.
If you prefer adventure and excitement, Snowflake Mountain sends several spoiled, entitled young adults into the wilderness and dares them to survive. If you think Gen Z is spoiled and whiny, Snowflake Mountain will scratch your itch.
The Big Flower Fight sounds equally appealing. I won’t criticize those Kardashian and Housewife shows many of you enjoy. But you can’t deny that they showcase the worst of humanity. The greed. The pettiness. The nastiness.
The Big Flower Fight gathers ten florists and tasks them with creating beauty. You couldn’t ask for a more calming, relaxing hour of television. It reminds me of The Great British Bake Off, which many fans have praised for its pleasant atmosphere. I don’t think I made nearly enough recommendations. But I got my point across.
