How times change! The Gen Zs may never know, but not so long ago, chips and chicken used to be the signature dating meal and few men could afford it.

Now chips and chicken is considered low-end teens’ meal, and never in my dining lifetime did I ever think that chips could ever be paired with beans – not even by mistake.

Katic Foods Najjeera just paired them and given that it was priced at Shs 15,000, the same average price as chips and chicken, I was curious to try out the meal. Firstly, the aroma of fresh, hot, tender, mushy-crunchy beans and chips is enchanting though not the ideal eye candy.

The pairing looks misplaced at a glance, but as you eat on, a distinct taste starts to emerge and you start to enjoy the pairing. It can pass for one of those days when you are tired of the usual tastes, especially for the regular outgoing foodies.

The meal also comes with some rice on the side, and you would expect the beans to be the natural pairing, but the type of dry grainy rice that they use makes it less memorable.

The beans are really well cooked with fresh garden eggs (entula) adding to their earthy flavours. But that is it. It is a simple meal that will leave you a bit confused as to whether it was super nice or simply nice meal. Perhaps it is worth another try before the final verdict.
