Uganda plays Singapore this afternoon in its opening campaign of the Netball World Cup, as 16 competing nations take to a ten-day thrilling action at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The official opening ceremony is expected at 5:00 pm (EAT) on Friday – at least five hours after the She Cranes had tussled it out against Singapore on court II. Defending Champions New Zealand battles Trinidad & Tobago for the competition’s first centre pass.

The opening ceremony will be the highlight of the evening session, ahead of the hosts, South Africa-Wales’ game at 7:00 pm (EAT).

Uganda, who have appeared at the last three Netball World Cup competitions since their first time in 1979 will be targeting a medal bracket finish, according to head coach Fred Mugerwa.

Coach Mugerwa said his team, comprising only two players – Mary Nuba and Stella Nanfuka from the last edition in Liverpool have a target to beat Singapore.

“We have a mission to win against Singapore tomorrow. All players know our mission of playing in the medal bracket and are looking forward for that,” Mugerwa said.

The She Cranes beat Barbados 54-33 on Sunday before overcoming Scotland 54-47 in preparation for this particular competition.

Uganda will depend on Nuba in the hunt for goals as Captain Irene Eyalu plays a backup role, while Norah Lunkuse is expected to attack from the wings. The central role will most likely fall on Margaret Baagala’s head with Shaffie Nalwanja beefing up the defence of Christine Nakitto and Stella Nanfuka.

The Netball World Cup 2023 takes place from July 28 to August 6, and this site will keep its visitors updated.
