Police warns against next week’s anti-corruption demonstrations
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke
Uganda police has issued a stern warning to the organisers of the anti-corruption demonstrations scheduled for next week Tuesday, July 23.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said the ongoing mobilization efforts on social media calling for people to march to parliament are unclear about the specifics regarding time, direction, and lack transparency which can potentially result in disorder.
Unidentified organizers have been calling on citizens to gather on Kampala streets on July 23 and march to parliament to express their dissatisfaction specifically with the alleged theft and corruption exhibited by the now-sanctioned speaker of parliament Annet Anita Among and other MPs.
“Given the lack of transparency and potential for disorder, the police strongly warn against proceeding with this march,” he stated.
Rusoke said while the right to peaceful demonstration will be respected, the police will not tolerate any attempts to incite public disorder.
“Uganda Police Force is issuing a clear warning against attempts to incite violence or breach public order through uncontrolled demonstrations,” Rusoke reiterated.
He urged individuals who wish to exercise their rights, such as the right to assembly and demonstration, to collaborate with the police, saying this will ensure that the demonstrations are not hijacked by individuals with criminal intentions.
“The right to a peaceful protest will be respected, but police will not tolerate attempts to incite public disorder,” Rusoke affirmed.
“UPF urges persons who wish to exercise their rights to always work collaboratively with it to ensure that they don’t aid persons of ulterior motives to hijack these expressions to accomplish criminal intentions.”
The police statement comes weeks after violent protests by Kenyan youths protesting against the Finance Bill and wasteful expenditure by the William Ruto government.
The youths took to the streets and stormed the parliamentary building forcing legislators to flee for dear life. The protesters vandalized the chambers before they torched part of the parliamentary building. At least 15 youths were gunned down by security forces.
Under the hashtags, #March2Parliament and #AnitaMustResign, several youths have been mobilising for the demonstration. Below are some of the mobilisation videos.

Yes #UgandaIsNotKenya, while Kenya boasts well-maintained roads, we’re left to navigate treacherous potholes & dust clouds, a reminder of the consequences of our leaders’ insatiable greed. Today police has been officially notified of the protest. The letter was taken and received at police HQ by Afande Tumukunde and SHARIFAH who appended her signature for acknowledgement.
They deliberately refused to stamp claiming received stamps are only for internal documents,… https://t.co/btJAtLp8pK pic.twitter.com/I6uZ4vqF9G

The 23rd July peaceful march is an outcry of wat the youth see as unabated, continuous looting of tax payers money by govt officials who only get a slap on the wrist or protection!. Demanding #accountability is not hate speech. We just want thieves to stop🛑 & be brought to book. https://t.co/pXAsdxUhYc pic.twitter.com/tcRz3Q4UcE

Imagine the limitless possibilities if we can rid our country of the most corrupt parliament in our history.
