Captain Mike Mukula has announced a Shs 10 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of the driver responsible for the death of former Moroto Municipality MP Simon Peter Aleper.
Aleper, 50, died from severe injuries including a shattered skull, broken ribs, and liver rapture sustained in a road accident on the Tirinyi-Iganga highway last week. The accident involved an unidentified vehicle that lost control and hit Aleper’s Toyota V8, killing him on the spot
He was laid to rest on Tuesday in his ancestral home in Loputuk Cell A, Kangole town council in Napak district. According to the police report that was presented to the mourners by Mt Moroto Regional police commander, Ahmed Badiri, the vehicle which is still at large, lost control and hit Aleper’s Toyota V8, registration number, UAP787Q, killing him on the spot.
Since the incident, leaders in Karamoja have expressed concerns about why it has taken the police a long time to identify the vehicle and driver yet there are security cameras along highways.
Mukula, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairperson for the eastern region during the burial on Tuesday said that he had staked a cash reward and appealed to the public to cooperate and provide the information that would lead to the arrest of the runaway driver.
“If the cameras do not see that, I’m putting Shs 10 million as a ransom for anybody who can identify and cause the arrest of that driver who caused the sudden and untimely death of the gallant son of Karamoja. We shall not rest, and I urge everybody and anybody who wants that opportunity to avail the information,” Mukula said.
John Paul Kodet, LC V chairperson of Napak district said that forensic investigations be exhausted to ensure justice prevailed for the people of Karamoja.
Peterken Lochap, member of parliament for Bokora East in Napak district said that the driver who knocked the Aleper should be brought to book and punished for his reckless actions. He said that as leaders, they are committed to follow up with the matter up to its conclusion.
