Muganga: Ugandans need to be empowered to reinvent education with AI
Dr Lawrence Muganga
Dr Lawrence Muganga, the vice chancellor of Victoria University, says the Ugandan education system needs a deeper understanding of the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven tools, technologies and learning platforms to create customized learning paths for students.
Muganga was one of the keynote speakers at the AI in education forum organized between November 25 to November 27 in Toronto, Canada. The event brings together the top 150 universities shaping the future of learning with technologies like AI.
“Over the course of the forum, we resolved that AI can enhance instruction, assessment and administration from early childhood through higher education. I shared my vision for the role of AI in creating more adaptive, equitable and personalized learning experiences for all students,” he says.
Some of the topics explored and discussed in the conference included AI adaptive learning systems, AI intelligent tutoring system and Personalized learning using AI, among others. Others included AI-assisted grading and feedback, educational AI chatbots and student predictive analytics.
According to Muganga, the forum, which was organized by the Chartered Institute of Professional Certifications, redefined the educational landscape by uniting visionaries, educators and technologists in Toronto.
“It was a call to action for those who believe in reshaping the educational paradigm through the transformative power of AI, creating an environment that is not only adaptive and responsive but also forward-looking,” he adds.
Victoria University was selected as Africa’s sole representative of Africa among the top 150 tertiary institutions shaping the future of education through artificial intelligence.
“It is a remarkable honour, yet it raises an important question: Where does this leave the rest of Africa on the AI journey?”
“We must reflect on how much more Africa can contribute to this transformative movement. The world is rapidly embracing AI as the future of education, and this forum was a testament to the urgency of the moment. This is not just a moment of pride. Africa has the potential, and we must invest in technology, education, and innovation to ensure that we are not left behind. The AI revolution is happening now, and it is crucial that we act to secure our place and prepare for tomorrow, today. Let us seize the opportunity to lead and shape the future of education and beyond.”
He adds that Ugandans must challenge themselves to do more because the world is rapidly embracing AI to redefine education and Africa cannot afford to be a spectator.
“This is a wakeup call for governments, institutions and leaders across the continent to invest boldly in technology, education and innovation. It is time for Uganda and Africa to embrace AI’s power for education and beyond. Let’s prepare for tomorrow, today! The AI revolution is not waiting. It is unfolding now, reshaping the future before our eyes. Africa has the talent, potential, and resolve to lead. Let us rise to the occasion, embrace this moment, and build a future where Africa shapes, not just follows, the next frontier of education and global progress. The time to act is now.”
