Chicken wings and mashed potatoes

Many foreigners, especially from Europe, are perturbed at how all life completely shuts down once it starts raining in Uganda.

I dare them to try ordering food on one rainy morning. Not only are the delivery charges higher due to an understandable ‘rain inconvenience’, but the food will also take longer to arrive.

Again, understandable from the Ugandan perspective – given that many workers don’t own cars and there’s hardly an effective public transport system. And very many restaurants do their fresh foods shopping in the morning to safeguard against theft and wastage.

Mivamaz bar and restaurant was at least able to deliver the BBQ chicken wings and mashed potatoes about one hour and 40 minutes later.

A record time for such a rainy day in Uganda, despite the meal being easy, laidback and quick to prepare. It was a slightly fluffy, creamy, very well-buttered, smooth meal. You could eat it all day long. Very very enjoyable.

Unfortunately, I could not say the same about their chicken wings, especially with their deceptively inviting look. They were clearly rushed, they were not as fresh, but okay. They had an undesirable smoke smell and were quite too chewy for chicken, which I would always prefer to be spritzed and juicy.

Except for the shape, you could hardly tell they were chicken wings as they lacked the chicken taste. The half-cooked onion only made the already bad taste worse.

At least they serve them aplenty – more than six pieces and perhaps worth the Shs 20,000 price, after all. On such a rainy day, we can afford to cut them some slack.
