Looking for Uganda’s best lady golfer? Simple stuff. Peace Kabasweka.

She has hit a zone that has rendered her competition irrelevant. A week after winning the Entebbe Ladies Open crown, the Tooro-born golfer entrenched her position by coasting to victory in the inaugural I&M Katogo Series event played at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club last Saturday.

In a tournament where landing on the green in regulation was rewarded, Kabasweka showed her mastery of the dry conditions to triumph with a score of 78. She prevailed on countback. However, it wasn’t her only prize on the day; she also claimed the nearest-to-the-pin bragging rights.

Fast-rising Sarah Nduhukire beat long-hitting Meron Kyomugisha on countback to win Group A in the ladies while Shalom Kayenje topped the Group B with 78. The women’s longest drive went to Bernadette Musanabera, whose mushrooming game is scaling new heights with every passing day.

The well-attended tournament included the I&M CEO Robin Bairstow among the day’s golfers and he relished every moment on the course. “We had a good event and there was a lot of fun; this game does bring out all enthusiasts of sport and it is worth investing all the time and resources because of the experience it brings,” he remarked.

Perez Muhwezi was the best male golfer of the day. Playing off handicap 26, he shot 71 to carry the day. Like Kabasweka, he also triumphed via countback. Both Kabasweka and Muhwezi were rewarded with RwandAir tickets.

Trash-talking Vincent Katutsi was the day’s gross winner with a magnificent 81 while Paul Habyarima, Brian Omeda and Omar Badreldin claimed honours in Groups A, B and C respectively. Darius Mugisha smashed home the men’s longest drive for the nearest-to-the-pin, Lino Anguzu showcased brilliant pin-hunting accuracy.

Victoria Motors had staked a car for whoever sunk a hole-in-one but none of the 200-plus golfers managed the feat. The 19th hole of the day was a glitzy, sparkling and lit affair that was spiced by the presence of Dee Jay Alisha.

The next event in the I&M Katogo Series will be held on June 29 and the format will be ‘Tee for Me.’  Other sponsors of the Katogo Series on Saturday were GA Insurance, Fenon Events, Goldman Furniture and NBS Sport.
