Kabale University is on the verge of losing over Shs 3 billion in tuition fees collected this year due to the delayed release of the funds from the consolidated fund.
During the university’s 7th graduation ceremony, vice chancellor, Prof Joy Kwesiga, expressed her concerns about the challenges hindering the growth and development of the institution.
One of the major issues highlighted was the inability to recover the money collected and transferred to the consolidated fund in accordance with the law.
Prof Kwesiga explained that despite applying for a supplementary budget, the university has not received a positive response. With the current financial year coming to an end, there is a high risk of losing the collected funds if the government does not address the applications in a timely manner.
University Council chairperson, Adison Kakuru, acknowledged that while Kabale University has excelled in student recruitment and staff performance, it still faces challenges related to inadequate infrastructure. As a relatively new public university, it has not benefited from previous government programs aimed at infrastructural development.
In contrast, the university chancellor, Prof George Mondo Kagonyera, emphasized the importance of the institution’s staff and students, stating that they are the most crucial aspect. He expressed confidence that the university would continue to achieve its goals and objectives, regardless of the current state of infrastructure.
The 7th graduation ceremony saw 12,777 students graduating in various academic fields. Among them, Michel Mashemererwa received the Best Male Student award for graduating with a first-class degree in Bachelor of Applied Design and Fine Art, while Ms Betty Kabugo Nyakake received the Best Female Student award for her first-class degree in Bachelor of Environmental Health Science.
According to the vice chancellor’s report, 33 students graduated with first-class degrees, including 21 males and 11 females.
