State Minister for ICT Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo (L) and HiPipo CEO Innocent Kawooya at the awards night

The 13th edition of the HiPipo Music Awards, which happened last Friday at the Kampala Serena hotel, saw different artistes walk away with accolades after emerging winners at this year’s awards gala.

Most of the musical performances of the night took the audience in a fully packed Victoria hall back in time, with musicians who are rarely seen these days such as Zigi Dee, Coco Finger, Phoebe Nassolo, Clever J, Phina Mugerwa, Viboyo, Omulangira Ssuuna, Abdul Mulaasi and Ronald Mayinja taking the stage and proving that they still got it.

Current hit makers such as Aaronx, Lil Pazo, Acidic Vokoz, Pretty Banks, Gloria Bugie, Roden Y Kabako, Naava Grey and saxophonist Happy Kyazze also entertained patrons.

Fast-rising star Joshua Baraka was one of the biggest winners of the night, walking away with two accolades for East Africa Best Artiste and his song Dalilah winning East Africa Best Song. Upon receiving his awards, Baraka said, “Didn’t know I will ever choke up while receiving my first award on stage. Always thought I would have the words to say. It was super emotional. Thank you all so much. I love you all. The journey is beautiful.”

But the night belonged to Kennedy SS’ Streams of Life choir who walked away with the biggest awards of the night for Artiste of the Year and Song of the Year for their Gospel song Lukusuuta, although the audience’s firm favourites for Artiste of the Year were Joshua Baraka, Sheebah Karungi and King Saha.

The award was presented to them by the minister of State for ICT Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo, who was the chief guest, in company of Innocent Kawooya, the CEO of HiPipo.
