If you are a betting man, the safe man ahead of the 2023 Uganda Open is on Godfrey Nsubuga.
The Mehta Golf Club golfer has peaked at the right time and is striking the ball in such impeccable fashion that it is hard to look beyond him when scanning for a favourite to win the biggest prize in amateur golf.
Last weekend, Nsubuga stunned a strong field to win the Kericho Tea Fields trophy in a tournament that included top Kenyan amateurs like John Lejirma and Ebil Omollo.
Nsubuga carded a three-over total of 219 to claim the winners’ trophy and a cash prize of Kshs 74,000 or Shs1.88m. He played rounds of 73, 70 and 75 to outlast Lejirma, who carded 73, 73 and 75.
Accordingly, Nsubuga’s recent victory sets the tone for the 2023 Uganda Open, which tees off next weekend with the Ladies Open at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) course at Kitante.
Meanwhile, speaking at the launch of the Open on October 2, Emmanuel Wamala, the UGC captain, stated: “We have prepared the perfect course for all golfers who will play in the competition and as a club, we have offered three free rounds of practice for all golfers who will take part in the Open,” Wamala stated.
Martha Babirye is the ladies’ defending champion while Andrew Sekibega and Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi are holders for the amateur and professional titles respectively.
