In an emotional unveiling ceremony held last Friday at Kampala Sheraton hotel, Oliver Nakakande, the former Miss Uganda 2019-2021, launched her autobiography, The Escape: How I Ran From Shame To Fame.
The book chronicles Nakakande’s remarkable journey from a life of strife and abuse to one of fame and inner peace, with her crowning as Miss Uganda marking a turning point in her life.
Through the memoir, Nakakande opens up about her personal struggles, triumphs, and resilience that guided her towards becoming a symbol of hope. The launch, attended by prominent figures from various fields, had a panel session where notable names shared their stories of escaping struggles.
These included Joram Muzira, Cleopatra Koheirwe and Nana Kagga. Muzira shared the biggest aspect of his career that he had to overcome: “My family was skeptical about my career choice to manage models, some thinking I was ‘selling prostitutes’. But I kept going; I know I was changing the lives of these girls to send them to runways everywhere.”
Actress/filmmaker Nana Kagga shared: “I love telling stories and I tell stories from the female perspective. I have made the decision to change the narrative of how the Ugandan film industry is led.”
Actress Koheirwe said: “As a woman, this (film) industry is rough, but I am intentional about bringing positive energy into the space.”
Guests were moved by Nakakande’s own heartfelt storytelling and her courage in sharing her experiences. The evening was filled with heartwarming speeches, a book auctioning session, and an emotional tribute to Nakakande’s journey.
Nakakande’s book is expected to resonate with readers of all backgrounds, inspiring them to overcome adversity and embrace the possibilities that life has to offer.
“I wrote The Escape with a clear purpose: to inspire, empower, and uplift young Ugandan girls and young women everywhere,” Nakakande shared during the event.
“I believe our stories have the power to transform lives, and through my own experiences, I hope to shed light on the path less traveled.”
The book, available at Aristoc, is poised to be a bestseller, with early reviews already lauding its inspirational content and Nakakande’s compelling narrative. All proceeds from the book sales are going to The Oliver Nakakande Foundation, a space where teenage mothers are given a new chance at life.
