CONFIRMED: President Museveni appoints Dr. Micheal Atingi-Ego as BoU Governor, to be deputised by Prof. Nuwagaba

Dr. Micheal Atingi-Ego has been appointed the Bank of Uganda Governor and will be deputised by Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, according to Faruk Kirunda,President Museveni’s Deputy Spokesperson.
DrAtingi-Ego became the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda on April 23, 2020 after being appointed by President Museveni to the position.
Mr. Atingi-Ego, previously worked as the Executive Director of the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI) from September 2018. MEFMI is a multinational capacity building institute based in Harare, Zimbabwe.
At MEFMI, he spearheaded initiatives to adapt the product offering to the fast evolving capacity building landscape for sustained relevance to its membership, including among others:
Enhancement of e-learning for dynamic environments e.g. the COVID-19 induced social distancing; Integration of the Theory of Change into the Monitoring and Evaluation framework for product effectiveness mindful of value for money and review of key operational manuals, procedures and guidelines for consistency with international best practices.
Serving as Deputy Director in the African Department of the IMF since June 2008, he was instrumental in enhancing the effectiveness of capacity development; modernising monetary policy frameworks in developing countries; and improving macroeconomic statistics in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, he was deeply involved in the Fund’s work on data management across the institution besides providing strategic guidance to many IMF African country teams on program and surveillance work.
Having started his career at the Bank in August 1984, he advanced to the role of Executive Director Research. His research and publications focused on macroeconomic and financial policies and statistics. He was an eminent resource in capacity building and a consultant on monetary operations and balance of payments in east, west, and southern Africa.
Mr. Atingi-Ego holds a PhD in Economics from Liverpool UniveMusersity (1996), a MSc. Economics in International `Economics and Banking from Cardiff Business School, University of Wales (1991), and a BSc. Economics from Makerere University.
He’s credited for his regional and international experience; well-honed managerial and open communication skills; as well as the commitment to advancing the goals and governance of the Bank of Uganda through professional leadership on key policy & institutional issues.

Born on 1st January, 1964 in Kabale District, the Ugandan economist, academic and father of four has spent a large part of his academic career at Makerere University and also working as an international consultant on economic transformation.

He has worked in analysis of fiscal metrics for governments in Africa, review of financial performance and analysis of tax policies. He’s also the Executive Director at REEV Consult International Limited, a private consultancy firm, incorporated in Uganda.
In his consultancy role, he has worked for African Peer Review Mechanism under NEPAD, and was a member of the African Regional Panel of Experts on Development.
Nuwagaba is a member of the World Bank Consultative Group that developed the African Plan of Action. He was the team leader of FINSCOPE – Financial Penetration Project (2013), a team leader for Developing Financial Management and Training manual for Parliamentary Accountability Committees, member of audit committee of the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development of the Republic of Uganda, winner of International Award for significant Contribution to World Society and Appears In World Who is Who (2004).
In addition, he was a consultant for mid-term review of the National Development Plan for the Republic of Uganda (2010–2014), a consultant for formulating the East African Community development investment plan (2016-2020).
He’s also a regular speaker and panelist at major economic summits and conferences.
