Dai Jie in the dock
Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s court has remanded a Chinese national, Dai Jie, on charges of murder.
Yesterday Thursday, chief magistrate Kayizzi remanded Dai Jie to Murchison Bay Prison until August 14, 2024, as the court seeks to find an interpreter.
Kayizzi did not read the charges to him due to a language barrier. Jie appeared in court holding a phone, using it to translate some of the English words spoken.
He informed the court that his lawyer, only identified as Charles, was not present. State Attorney Ivan Kyazze had to call in a Chinese translator to determine the specific language Jie understands.
The prosecution alleges that on July 7, at Haidah Plaza on Ben Kiwanuka Street in Kampala, Dai Jie, with malice aforethought, caused the death of Yang Wen Li. The police are still working to recover the weapon used and the remains of the deceased.
