The deaths come as former colonial power France prepares to withdraw an anti-terrorism force stationed in the country at the request of its new military leaders, who seized power in a coup two months ago.

The deaths occurred on the outskirts of the southern port city, its disaster risk management unit said Tuesday. 

"We Algerians have chosen the camp of justice, decolonisation, freedom, self-determination and human rights," said Algerian Ambassador Amar Bendjama.

Since taking power in a coup in 2022, the junta has suspended multiple TV and radio stations and expelled foreign correspondents, especially from French media.

The election was scheduled to take place in February 2024. But the Malian military-led transition government said on Monday that it couldn’t move ahead with it due to technical reasons. A junta spokesman said a new date will be announced later. 

Ethiopian Citizens for Justice (Ezema) president Chane Kebede, an ethnic Amhara, was arrested on Sunday while sitting at a cafe with a friend and remains behind bars, the party's head of legal and organisational affairs Seyoum Mengesha said.
