Was this Glovo’s or The Gardens Najjera’s mess?

Now that Glovo seemingly enjoys a food delivery monopoly following the collapse of Jumia Foods, one might not really expect an improvement in their service.

Yet, Glovo somehow managed to outdo themselves with an order of chicken kikalayi from The Gardens Najjera – this beat their lowest of the low.

For a meal priced at Shs 40,000, one would expect proper packaging and decent portions. However, this was not the case. The accompanying soup had leaked into the plastic bag (kaveera) and seeped into the mashed potatoes, initially creating an unappetizing mess.

To make matters worse, the meal itself was disappointingly meagre. Imagine being served just three nugget-sized pieces of chicken and four fingers of matooke, all drowned in an overwhelming pile of fried cabbage.

It’s no wonder pork diners often joke about suing kikalayi vendors for maximizing cabbages over meat. Clearly, the same principle now silently slid into chicken kikalayi.

Despite the disastrous delivery, the meal itself was a delightful surprise. The aroma was enchanting, and the taste was equally impressive. Who knew fresh matooke fingers and cabbage could pair so harmoniously, with the chicken fitting seamlessly into the mix?

The accompanying mashed potatoes, enhanced with a touch of butter, elevated the overall flavour, creating a dish that was as satisfying to the palate as it was filling – a marvellously tasty dish tarnished by shoddy delivery standards. Nevertheless, it left a lingering, satiating taste in the mouth and stomach.
