Nurse arrested for torturing her 9-year-old cousin over unwashed plates

A nurse working at St Valentine Medical Center in Tororo Municipality has been arrested for allegedly torturing her 9-year-old cousin over failing to complete household chores.

Norah Akumu, a resident of Water Village in the Western Division, Tororo Municipality, reportedly assaulted the minor, a primary four pupil at Rock View primary school, on Saturday for reportedly not washing plates, laying her bed, and cleaning her innerwear.

The incident was uncovered when Noah Okumu, Central Parish councillor, encountered the child crying for help on someone’s veranda in Water Village. The minor had a bleeding and swollen mouth. Upon questioning, she revealed that Akumu had beaten her severely with a cane, and when the cane broke, Akumu resorted to biting her.

The case was immediately reported to local authorities, and Akumu was summoned to the Water Village police post for questioning. While there, she allegedly intimidated the police officers, questioning their involvement in what she described as a family matter.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that their first step would be to ensure the minor receives medical attention. The case will then be referred to Tororo Central police station for further investigation and management.
