Students at Makerere University

During this period, as our children embark on the journey to select their future academic institutions, the window for university applications is now open.

Navigating this process can prove challenging for some parents in their quest to secure the most suitable program for their child at the university. It is imperative to acknowledge that many universities have introduced innovative programs tailored to meet current market demands and trends, which some parents and applicants may not be fully aware of.

In anticipation of submitting university applications, it is essential not to limit consideration solely to traditional programs. It is strongly advised to conduct comprehensive research on the university’s official website or through advertised programs in various media platforms to explore new offerings. Dive into these programs, assess their suitability, and determine which ones align with your child’s aspirations.

If you encounter a program of interest but lack sufficient information, do not hesitate to seek career guidance from the respective institutions. Many universities have Admissions or Career Guidance Counsellors who can furnish invaluable insights and assistance in making informed decisions.

As you check on various programs. please take into consideration the cutoff points or weights assigned to each program. It is advisable to compare similar programs available at different universities, taking into account the tuition fees and other associated requirements.

When making a decision, it is crucial to involve the child, who is the primary beneficiary, to collectively make well- informed choices. Remember, it is the child who will be pursuing the studies, not you. Therefore, it is imperative to collaborate on researching the various options available.

Refrain from imposing your interests onto your child’s aspirations, abilities, or future goals. Each child may harbor unique career ambitions that differ from those of other family members. Your responsibility is to explore the programs together and provide guidance.

Your guidance should align with the demands of the job market, your financial capacity, and other pertinent factors, all while prioritizing the best interests of your child. In case you don’t receive communication from the university within the specified timeframe, you can proactively follow up with them to inquire about the status of your application.

Currently with numerous universities both in Uganda and globally, the competition for students and adherence to academic standards has intensified. Universities must enhance their responsiveness to applicants, particularly in this digital age, and have good customer care. It is essential to consider the investment made by individuals who pay application fees and select a university of their choice.

Failing to provide feedback, even after reaching out to the university, raises concerns about customer care. Universities must treat applicants with respect and offer timely guidance to prevent potential loss of interest because they play a crucial role in sustaining the business of educational institutions.

Several universities have transitioned to online application processes, eliminating the need for physical form submissions. Online applications offer the advantage of enabling applicants to monitor the progress of their admission status conveniently. Embracing this digital approach can streamline the application process and enhance efficiency for both applicants and universities.

It is vital that applicants meticulously complete all sections of the application without any omissions. Certain online application systems may restrict progression to subsequent questions until all preceding ones have been addressed.

Also, various universities have begun to offer their academic programs online, especially at the postgraduate level. This mode of study is often more cost-effective compared to traditional in-person attendance.

Applicants are strongly advised to seek recommendations from their referees and not underestimate the significance of these letters. Failure to provide all the necessary information for programs offering scholarships, which are typically highly competitive, could result in missing out on valuable opportunities.

Some individuals prefer to apply to a single university and, or select only one program despite the option to choose multiple. It is highly recommended not to concentrate all efforts in one place so that you don’t keep your eggs in one basket. Diversifying applications by applying to multiple universities can increase the chances of success.
