The International Social Security Association (ISSA) has picked Uganda’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF) as the hub for its services in the East Africa region.
The decision was announced during the ISSA’s two-day conference at Kampala’s Serena hotel. The regional office was unveiled with the responsibility of promoting dialogue and cooperation among ISSA members in East Africa, organizing technical seminars on regional priority topics, hosting ISSA Academy workshops, and promoting the sharing of good practices in line with ISSA guidelines.
ISSA is a global organization that provides professional guidelines, expert knowledge, services, and support to improve social security administration worldwide. At the same event, NSSF hosted its first technical seminar, showcasing the theme of leveraging digitalization and innovation to extend social security coverage in East Africa as part of the launch activities of the center.
State minister for the Elderly, Dominic Gidudu, challenged NSSF and the regional pension institutions to provide more value for their members in health, education, agriculture, and financial empowerment.
Marcelo Abi-Ramia Caetano, ISSA secretary general, emphasized that ISSA will identify the social security needs in the regional member states through the newly opened regional center and collaborate with them to make the lives of people in the region better.
With NSSF at the helm, ISSA’s efforts in East Africa are sure to make a meaningful impact towards achieving greater social security coverage and improving the lives of people in the region.
