It is a wonder that this Caribbean Jerk Chicken, usually priced at Shs 40,000, is now at Shs 28,000 thanks to the June discount.
If these are the exact same portions served at Shs 40,000, then it is a complete rip-off. Formerly operating as Cayenne and infamous for its generally unfair prices, The Villa has picked up where Cayenne left off.
Their four chicken pieces are not only so small (they can pass as beef pieces) – a complete contrast to the promo pictures displayed on the Jumia App – but they are not close to the known and expected aromatic, sweet, smoky, and spicy Jamaican Jerk chicken experience.
Instead, the chicken carries an annoyingly dry, crunchy and extremely salty and deep-fried texture. No grill-charred and spiced exterior or tenderized interior. I don’t know if the over- salting that leaves your taste buds tweaked and no longer tasting for hours was meant to make up for the clearly missing savoury seasonings and marinade.
Luckily, the pairing of mashed potatoes saved the day. It was as smooth as expected and the accompanying mushroom soup, was one of the very best that you can ever have. It was so different from any other mashed potatoes I have ever had.
It carried a slightly rubbery and rough texture, which rolled off in one piece without sticking to the plastic container. And talking of containers, you will get these in plenty – one for the chicken, one for the mashed potatoes, another for mushroom soup and another for the steamed salad.
The environmentalists will surely not give them any nod of approval for adding this much plastic to the ecosystem.
