TITLE IN SIGHT: KCCA players perform a cheeky celebration after their team’s 1-0 win over Gaddafi on April 29 at Kakindu stadium
The 2022-23 Uganda Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling in years. And it is not hard
to see why.
The Championship battle is a three-horse race with leaders SC Villa, rivals KCCA and holders Vipers all locked up in a fascinating fight for this year’s title.
There have been several unexpected results, such as KCCA’s recent run of four games without victory, Villa’s back-to-back losses to Aru Hill and the Kasasiro Boys and Vipers’ hot-and-cold form which has seen them pick four points out of a possible nine.
The inconsistency in form of all three clubs has left the title race wide open and it is highly unlikely that we have witnessed the last of the twists and turns in the Championship.
On Friday, May 5, KCCA travel to St Mary’s Kitende for a mouth-watering showdown against the Venoms in a match that will go a very long way in determining the destiny of the title.
Considering that the league is due to end this month, the games are running out thick and fast. A win is huge, a defeat extremely expensive. Now is not the time to drop points irrespective of whether you are playing a title contender or not.
KCCA coach Jackson Mayanja, who was appointed in the interim after Morley Byekwaso resigned, remains bullish.
“I have come here to take the trophy,” Mayanja said after his team downed Gaddafi FC (1-0) last week.
“It is very important to win every game now if we want to become champions.
“If we win our next three match- es, we will have a clearer picture.”
The first of those three games was yesterday against Big League- bound Onduparaka at the MTN Omondi stadium but it is the second match – away to defending champions Vipers – that carries most significance.
Vipers, who were due to host Gaddafi FC by press time, are a bruised side and won’t consider the possibility of falling further in the title chase despite having games in hand on both Villa and Vipers. The listless showing against SC Villa did nothing to enhance their chances of a successful defence of the title and defeat to KCCA would almost certainly ruin their designs on the trophy.
For the neutrals, the dramatic ending to the league is making glorious viewing for them. There has been a rise in the spectators attending matches involving Villa, KCCA and Vipers, particularly in the home matches.
But it has also not been uncommon to see rival fans of all three title-chasing clubs attending matches to cheer on fans of the lowly sides in the hope of seeing them pick surprise points.
