KAMPALA – Uganda Breweries Limited has graduated 94 retail outlet owners, bartenders and service staff from a three-day business training programme in Kampala.
The Learning for Life training was run in partnership with Enterprise Uganda. It covered business planning, customer service, and financial management, including cash-flow reconciliation and credit control. The customer service module was delivered by the Diageo Bar Academy.
According to the company, the programme targets people working in the hospitality trade who face barriers to employment. It aims to address problems that affect the survival of retail outlets, including poor debt management, limited product knowledge and informal customer service.
Participants received certificates at a graduation ceremony, and outstanding trainees were given awards.
Dr Joshua Mutambi, a Commissioner at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, was the guest of honour. Dr Mutambi said micro, small and medium enterprises were the backbone of Uganda’s service economy.
“Their long-term survival depends entirely on sound financial governance, compliance and skilled personnel,” he said.
Dr Mutambi said partnerships that teach bookkeeping, credit control and customer care helped businesses become more resilient and create jobs.
Pamela Bayenda, Head of Sustainability at Uganda Breweries, said retailers were the link between the company’s products and consumers. She said capability gaps and heavy debt continued to force viable businesses to close.
Bayenda said the programme trained 233 people in the 2026 financial year, more than half of them women. Women made up 73 of the 94 participants in the Kampala group, or 77.7 per cent, she said.
The Kampala training is the first phase of the programme for the 2027 financial year. The company said the next phase will train 100 retailers outside Kampala.
