Mini LED Moves Beyond Flagship TVs as Technology Claims 13% of Global Shipments

KAMPALA — Mini LED is moving into a broader phase of the television market, giving more shoppers access to the technology while making comparisons between products increasingly important.

According to Omdia figures cited in a new TCL release, Mini LED televisions represented 13% of global TV shipments in the second quarter of 2026.

That share points to a category extending beyond early adopters and flagship availability. As consumers encounter Mini LED across more products and price points, the badge on the box becomes only the starting point for a buying decision.

The technology uses smaller LEDs in a television’s backlight, making denser lighting systems possible. However, smaller LEDs alone do not determine how well a screen handles brightness, darkness or detail.

Much depends on how the backlight is arranged and controlled.

Hardware local dimming allows separate areas of the physical backlight to brighten or dim independently. Dimming-zone count determines how finely that control can be divided. Full Array Local Dimming distributes controllable zones behind the panel, providing the basis for localized light control across the screen.

For viewers, the relevance is in pictures that contain both bright and dark areas. A well-controlled backlight can direct brightness where it is needed while preserving darker parts of the image.

TCL argues that the category’s expansion places greater responsibility on manufacturers to explain these differences clearly.

When a technology is relatively new, simply including it in a product range can attract attention. As availability broadens, consumers need more useful ways to assess what different televisions offer.

TCL is among the manufacturers reporting substantial growth. The company said it shipped 2.43 million Mini LED TVs globally in the first half of 2026, up 77.1% year on year. Omdia data cited in its interim results placed it first globally by shipment volume for that period.

For Ugandan shoppers encountering the technology, the expanding category creates more to compare. The useful conversation now goes beyond whether a television has Mini LED to how effectively it uses it.
