UCC ED to staff: Internal audit is ‘catalyst for change,’ not feared foe

The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission, Nyombi Thembo
KAMPALA, Uganda— The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission, Nyombi Thembo, urged managers and staff Tuesday to embrace internal audit as a vital tool for organizational transformation, moving past skepticism or fear.
Speaking at an Internal Audit Awareness Breakfast Meeting at the UCC house in Bugolobi, Thembo stressed the critical role of internal audit in fostering a culture of accountability, transparency and continuous improvement within the commission.
“I encourage all managers and staff to recognize the importance of internal audit. Let’s take a positive approach and work together to bring about the changes we want to see,” Thembo said, advocating for a partnership approach with internal auditors.
He added, “Instead of fearing feedback, let’s welcome it. Rather than pushing back against change, let’s take initiative to make it happen. Together, we can create a stronger organization.”
The initiative is part of UCC’s observance of Internal Audit Awareness Month, a period dedicated to celebrating the often underappreciated yet crucial function of internal audit. The commission highlights the audit team’s contributions to creating and protecting value through engagement, insight and strategic guidance.
“At UCC, we regard internal audit as a fundamental pillar in our journey towards accountability and governance,” Thembo noted. He highlighted that a robust internal audit function not only helps detect potential weaknesses but also encourages innovation and enhances service delivery, aligning UCC’s operations with its regulatory mandate and strategic goals.
