KAMPALA, Uganda — Absa Bank Uganda has appointed David Wandera as its new Managing Director, effective May 5. The appointment follows regulatory approval from the Bank of Uganda.

Wandera, a seasoned banker with over 20 years of experience in business leadership, financial management, strategy, and stakeholder engagement, previously served as the bank’s Executive Director for operational efficiencies. Absa Uganda noted his critical role in growing the bank’s market share and establishing it as a top-three bank in the country by revenue and profitability.

Keith Kalyegira, the Board Chairman, expressed confidence in Wandera’s leadership, citing his deep understanding of customer needs and his track record of leadership, integrity, and innovation. Kalyegira said the board believes Wandera will continue to strengthen the bank’s market position and drive growth.

Wandera, a Chartered Accountant (FCCA – UK) with a Master’s in International Finance from the University of Leeds, said he is honored by the appointment and is committed to deepening customer trust, accelerating innovation, and driving inclusive growth. He emphasized integrity, collaboration, and delivering shared value to stakeholders.

The appointment aligns with Absa Uganda’s strategic goals of accelerating growth in digital banking, SME support, customer innovation, and inclusive finance. The bank aims to leverage its financial stability, local expertise, and regional presence to foster long-term value in Uganda’s financial sector.

Wandera’s appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first Ugandan to serve as Managing Director in the bank’s over 90-year history in Uganda. The Board and the Absa Uganda team have welcomed Wandera to his new role.
