Kanugu magistrates court

A 22-year-old businessman, Davis Orikiriza has been remanded to Kanungu government prison over alleged engagement in homosexuality.  

Orikiriza, a resident of Katungu village, Kanungu district is alleged to have had canal knowledge with a fellow man on March 22, 2023. Appearing before court on Thursday, Orikiriza was charged with engaging in an unnatural offence (homosexuality) contrary to section 145 of the penal code act.

He pleaded not guilty. Kanungu district resident state attorney Peter Muhendo asked for an adjournment, saying that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.    

Kanungu grade one magistrate, Athananthious Mukobi tasked Orikiriza to explain where he attained from training in such an act, but the suspect categorically refuted the accusations. Mukobi remanded him until April 6.  

Parliament last month passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023 that further criminalizes more lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) activities. The bill is yet to be assented to by President Yoweri Museveni.
