The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) holds the title for the world’s richest country in terms of mineral resources, with an estimated $23 trillion worth of untapped deposits.
If effectively harnessed, DR Congo has the potential to become the leading net exporter of natural resources and producer of finished goods globally.
DR Congo dominates the global cobalt market, accounting for approximately 60% of the world’s cobalt production. However, much of this valuable resource is exported to manufacture engines for cars, planes, ceramics, and batteries for electrical appliances.
The country is responsible for a staggering 80% of global coltan production, a mineral essential for the production of phones, laptops, and accessories used by major companies. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of child labor.
DR Congo boasts substantial uranium deposits, making it a crucial supplier during World War II for the atomic bombs used by various nations. It produced 80% of America’s nuclear weapons at the time.
With the world’s second-largest diamond reserves, DR Congo ranks as the third-largest diamond-producing country after Russia and Botswana. DR Congo stands as one of the world’s leading gold producers, with the majority of its artisanal gold being smuggled out of Africa through Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda en route to Dubai.
The demand for DR Congo’s artisanal gold remains high. The country’s mineral wealth is so vast that numerous sources claim one can extract minerals with their bare hands, emphasizing the abundance of resources waiting to be tapped.
As the 80th largest oil producer globally, DR Congo extracts over 4.1% of its oil reserves annually. The Congo rainforest, renowned for its biodiversity, is home to an impressive array of 600 tree species and 10,000 animal species. Notable residents include forest elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, okapi, leopards, hippos, and lions.
DR Congo is a prominent exporter of timber, boasting vast forest resources within the Congo Basin, home to the world’s largest mineral deposits, including wood, oil, diamonds, gold, and coltan.
The country has made its mark as a net exporter of entertainment, particularly in the music industry, with Congolese music experiencing significant popularity, especially during the 1990s. DR Congo possesses an astounding capacity to generate power, with the potential to produce 40GW, the highest in the world.
