Versatile Achola ready to storm world platform

Lillian Achola

The national netball team, She Cranes, stepped up preparations for the Vitality Netball World Cup 2023 by the switching camp to AVRS Sports Complex in Nakirebe for double training sessions last weekend.

And on Friday, June 30, as Uganda Airlines unveiled its sponsorship package for the She Cranes, the girls played two build-up matches against a male Select side, which they beat 57-53 and 56-54 with different players shining. We caught up with some of the stars below.

LILLIAN ACHOLA

The pivotal player termed her inclusion onto the country’s squad to Cape Town as a blessing and an achievement at the same time.

“I worked hard; training alone in order to impress the coaching staff and indeed my commitment paid off and I am contented,” Achola, who plays for Makindye Weyonjo in the domestic league, said.

Coach Fred Mugerwa described Achola as a utility player in front of any opponent, ready to storm the world platform.

CHRISTINE NAMULUMBA

Namulamba, who turns up for Prisons netball club, has won a number of accolades, including this year’s top scoring honours in the domestic league.

The 23-year-old will be covering-up for Mary Nuba as a shooting department at the Cape Town event. She demonstrated her proficiency in the recently-concluded national league in which she netted 791 goals.

FALIDAH KADONDI

The youthful, energetic, aggressive and still promising defender recalls how her primary school mistress in Butaleja district, eastern Uganda introduced her to the spot – enabling her to acquire a Kibuli SS scholarship.

“I am excited to be part of the national team. I play netball with a lot of passion because it has assisted me in exploring different parts of the country and across its borders,” Kadondi said.
