TotalEnergies Uganda launches first electric vehicle charging stations

TotalEnergies Marketing Uganda has launched its first public electric vehicle charging station at the Wampewo Service Station in Kampala, marking a significant step towards supporting sustainable transport and the growing use of electric bikes in the country

KAMPALA, Uganda – TotalEnergies Marketing Uganda has launched its first public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, marking a key step in the company’s push for sustainable energy solutions. The charging points, located at the Wampewo Service Station in Kampala, are part of a new collaboration with Green Hub, a local organisation focused on promoting electric mobility.

The launch is the first phase of a wider plan to roll out EV charging infrastructure across Uganda, as TotalEnergies looks to support the growing use of electric bikes in the country. The new charging stations will initially serve electric bikes, including 26 new e-bikes supplied by Green Hub. TotalEnergies said it aims to expand its network of charging points at other service stations across Uganda in the coming months.

TotalEnergies’ partnership with Green Hub is part of a wider collaboration with several key stakeholders, including MTN, Centenary Bank, Women Rising for Africa, and the Danish Embassy, as well as the Ugandan government. The company has contributed $5,000 to help increase the number of electric bikes for women riders in Uganda, in addition to donating 400 helmets to ensure safety for the new riders.

The move reflects TotalEnergies’ broader strategy to transition to cleaner energy sources globally, with the company aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The introduction of electric vehicle charging points is seen as a vital step in supporting the growth of electric mobility in Uganda and reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
