Sironko woman kills self, poisons her 3 children after husband marries 2nd wife

Some of the poisoned children in hospital

A 30-year-old woman in Mutufu town council, Sironko district in eastern Uganda has taken her own life in protest against her husband’s decision to marry a second wife.

Jesia Cherop allegedly laced food with poison, which she ate together with her three children after her husband identified as Sam Gidudu married a second wife. It is alleged that after eating the food, Cherop and the children began feeling unwell before eventually losing consciousness.

They were rushed to Mbale regional referral hospital, where Cherop and one of the children passed away shortly after arrival.

Denis Ephiliam Balinwarigha, Sironko resident district commissioner, confirmed the incident, saying that the other two children are still in critical condition at Mbale hospital. Gidudu couldn’t be reached for comment.
