Prof Pauline Byakika-Kibwika has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

The appointment follows an extensive search process by the vice chancellor search committee (VCSC). Byakika-Kibwika, renowned for her expertise in public health and leadership in higher education, emerged as the top candidate among the five finalists.

The VCSC, chaired by Prof Philippa Musoke and including members from the university council and senate, conducted a meticulous selection process starting in January 2024.

This involved multiple stages; the development of operational documents, advertising the position, shortlisting candidates, conducting due diligence, and final evaluations through interviews and public presentations.

Out of eleven applicants, five were shortlisted based on their qualifications. They underwent a thorough assessment across three stages; shortlisting (30 per cent), interviews (50 per cent), and public presentations (20 per cent).

Byakika-Kibwika, who has held various senior roles and contributed significantly to policy development and institutional growth, was ultimately recommended to the university council by the senate. Following the council’s approval, the chancellor, Prof Charles Olweny, officially appointed her on August 2, 2024.

The other candidates brought diverse expertise Dr Joel Bazira, an associate professor in microbiology; Prof Amon Agaba Ganafa, an experienced educator in engineering and technology; Dr Juliet Mwanga-Amumpaire, a leader in medical research and public health; and Dr Lynnette T. Kyokunda, specializing in educational leadership and curriculum development.

The university community expressed its gratitude to all participants and supporting bodies throughout the search process. Prof. Byakika-Kibwika’s appointment marks a new chapter for MUST, promising further growth and excellence under her leadership.
