Police dog Oscar nabs coffee thieves in Isingiro

Oscar tracked down Edward Nsimire

Police in Isingiro is holding two men after they harvested coffee berries from the garden of Christopher Muwonge, a resident of Twamabondo cell in Isingiro district.

On June 21, Muwonge woke up to a scene of dismay in his coffee garden after it had been ransacked by thieves. After reporting the matter to a nearby Nyamuyaja police post, a sniffer dog called Oscar was brought to the garden.

The dog was made to inhale the fragrance of the stolen coffee berries that lingered in the air. Shortly after, Oscar led police on a pursuit that spanned over one kilometer, as they followed the scent trail left behind by the thieves.

The villagers, captivated by what was unfolding, joined the trail.  Finally, Oscar’s relentless pursuit came to an end at the door of one Edward Nsimire.

The dog continued into the bedroom where the exhibit of fresh coffee berries was recovered. Nsimire later led police to the arrest of his partner-in-crime, who was only identified as Joseph.

Here, police also recovered another sack of fresh coffee berries. The two suspects are still in custody at Nyamuyaja police post for interrogation.
