Katwe territorial police is investigating an incident that led to the death of nine people during a New Year’s celebration stampede at Freedom City Mall in Namasuba, a Kampala city suburb.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire the incident happened at midnight when the event’s MC encouraged the revellers to go outside and watch a fireworks display.

After the fireworks display, a stampede ensued as revellers allegedly rushed back to jostle for seats resulting in the instant deaths of five people and injuries to several others.
