Landslides kill two children, injure woman in Kisoro

Rescuers at the scene

A landslide has killed two children and injured their grandmother.

The two children were identified as Laban Irasubiza and Brian Niyonsaba, all residents of Kamugoyi village in Kababa sub-county, Kisoro district.

Kisoro district environment officer Eunice Akankwasa says that the incident occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday amidst a heavy downpour that swept through the house where the children were sleeping. Their grandmother Gorgeana Juliana is now receiving treatment at Kisoro hospital.

Uganda Red Cross Society communications officer Irene Nakasiita says that heavy rains also left several crops destroyed in the neighbouring sub-counties of Murora, Nyarubuye, and Nyundo. By press time, the heavy downpour was still experienced in all parts of the Kigezi region.

In May 2023, at least 10 people were killed after heavy rain caused mudslides in Murora sub-county and Bunagana town council in the same district. The mudslides also claimed the lives of about eight more people in Rukiga, Rubanda, Kanungu, and Kabale in the same period.
