Kisoro teacher beats to death 11-year-old pupil for not grasping lesson

Police have mounted a manhunt for Pasco Hakizimana, a teacher of Mutorole primary school in Kisoro district who allegedly assaulted to death a primary four pupil because of failure to grasp his lesson.

Hakizimana allegedly assaulted 11-year-old Dan Gasore, the son of Hillary Tumusiime, a boda boda rider and resident of Ruburankono village in Gasiza parish Nyakabande sub-county.

According to Tumusiime, the errant teacher assaulted the deceased on March 9. He explains that the minor returned home while crying and accused the teacher of hitting him on the head and back. Tumusiime explains that the minor’s condition deteriorated and he started bleeding from the nose prompting them to rush him to a nearby clinic for treatment.

He says that on Monday evening, the clinic referred the minor to Kisoro hospital for further management where he died moments after arrival.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson said that the deceased’s body is lying at Kisoro hospital mortuary pending postmortem as investigations into the matter continue. He says that police have also commenced a search for Hakizimana who is currently on the run. In Uganda, corporal punishment is prohibited under section 94 of the Children’s Act.
