Hima Cement becomes first factory in Uganda to deploy 5G

MTN Uganda Limited has partnered with Hima Cement to have 5G internet technology deployed at the Hima factory in Kasese district, western Uganda.

5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks, which cellular phone companies began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G networks which provide connectivity to most current cellphones.

Jean Michelle, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Hima Cement Factory and Sylvia Mulinge, MTN Uganda CEO made the joint announcement in Kasese.

Speaking at the event, Mulinge commended Hima Cement for taking advantage of the latest technology and its capabilities. Mulinge said Hima is the first factory in Uganda to deploy 5G internet technology in their business processes and activities.

“The rollout of limited spectrum 5G internet technology at Hima is part of our long-standing commitment to creating solutions for businesses. The speed of tech shall offer most businesses like Hima a competitive advantage in the business. MTN has been receiving numerous calls from our users that they need fast and affordable internet. The journey started with Hima Cement.”

“You can not deliver automation if your internet speed and network are not effective. 5G internet speed allows manufacturers to have a five-dimension experience. These things can only be when technology is working. I am hopeful that the memorandum of understanding shall inspire the entire ecosystem to innovate around technology to ensure that we realize the 5G internet dream so that our customers can enjoy meaningful value,” Mulinge added.

5G technology is prized for having high downloading speeds estimated of 1GB per second, low latency when connected with cameras and high feedback when using virtual reality (VR). Among the other technology features that Hima shall deploy at their plant are compatible cameras and VR headsets.

Following regulatory approval, Mulinge noted that the entire deployment process should take approximately 60 days to be completed.

“MTN has the necessary equipment to ensure that the nationwide rollout of 5G technology is effected. This shall follow regulator’s approval,” she said.

Michelle said the deployment of 5G internet at their plant in Kasese shall help them to train more knowledgeable personnel and also decrease the operation-associated risks in the factory.

He added, “When we create value with 5G internet, we shall be able to spread its impact. Since our key area as manufacturers is the health and safety of staff, we shall use the internet to provide training to our staff on and off the plant. It shall also open more doors for remote collaboration with other members in the Lafarge group, offer expertise to address some challenges remotely, quality control and the maintenance of equipment among others.”

“Since the technology is characterized by ultra-high speed and low latency, we shall be able to monitor activities in the quarry. Although it is with a limited spectrum, the technology shall help in improving the standards of the Hima community which has schools, markets and other social groupings to create value through harnessing value”.
