Four people have died in two separate accidents in Mbarara City today morning. The first accident occurred at Mile 3 on Isingiro road, claiming the lives of two people on the spot while others escaped with serious injuries.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Regional police spokesperson says that the two were killed when a Canter truck, registration number, UAZ 438E destined for Isingiro from Nyamitanga tried to overtake another vehicle and met with a boda boda coming from the opposite direction.
He explains that the truck tried to evade another oncoming vehicle and rammed into a Toyota Corolla, registration number, UAE 777U killing the driver and the co-driver on the spot while three victims travelling in the same vehicle survived with injuries.
According to Kasasira, the third victim died on arrival at the hospital. He explains that the unidentified accident victims were from Lwamagwa in Masaka while the driver and one passenger who were in the truck were from Kaberebere in Isingiro district.
The second accident occurred in Ruti, Mbarara City South Division along Mbarara-Kabale road involving a Toyota Spacio, registration number, UAY 169E and a Bajaj boxer motorcycle, registration number, UEY 417V. According to Kasasira, the motorcycle was carrying two passengers including one with a baby girl.
The vehicle ran over the minor’s mother, killing her instantly. The rider and the second passenger together with the baby were rushed to Mbarara hospital in critical condition. Kasasira says that the Spacio that was coming from Mbarara city heading towards Ruti knocked the motorcycle that was from the opposite side heading towards Mbarara city.
He explains that the accident occurred when the motorcycle rider attempted to overtake another vehicle at Stabex and ended up in another lane where he rammed into an oncoming vehicle. Kasasira says that the vehicle crashed the female passenger that came from behind and died on the spot.
Kasasira blames both accidents on reckless driving. James Opio a guard, at Stabex fuel station says the accident happened after one vehicle that was exiting the station abruptly entered the road in disregard of other road users. He, however, says this particular vehicle just sped off.
