Fire guts Keshwala factory in Jinja

Plumes of smoke from the factory

A Tuesday morning fire has gutted Keshwala factory and beverages depot in Walukuba ward, Jinja city in eastern Uganda.

The fire is said to have started at around 4:30 am when most casual labourers were leaving the plastic manufacturing plant premises. By 8:00 am, huge flames and plumes of smoke could still be seen as firefighters attempted to contain the situation.

According to James Mubi, spokesperson for the Kiira region, fire brigade teams from both the police and well-wishers contained the fire from spreading throughout the factory premises. The most affected departments were the spare parts store and the transport department.

Mubi confirmed that the night-duty casual labourers, as well as the sodium silicate plant and administration blocks, were not affected by the fire.
