Five Chinese firms operating in Uganda’s oil industry have donated $500,000 (about Shs 1.75 billion) in cash and equipment to Entebbe Children Welfare School. The school provides education to children with special needs.

The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Uganda Ltd pooled resources with its contractors in the Kingfisher Oilfield in the Albertine region to raise the $500,000 donation in cash and equipment, which was delivered to the school last week.

Part of the money will be used to construct more classrooms and staff houses at the school, which currently has over 120 pupils.

Speaking at the handover function, Hu Weijie, the acting president of CNOOC Uganda Limited, said the donation is a testament to their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“At CNOOC Uganda Limited, we believe in the transformative power of education. By investing in the Entebbe Children Welfare School, we aim to enhance the learning experience and provide opportunities for students to excel academically. We are honored to collaborate with our contractors and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the vulnerable children who represent the future of Uganda,” Weijie said.

Alice Nyangoma Basaza, the school headmistress, received the dummy cheque in the company of Entebbe mayor Fabrice Rulinda and other local area leaders.

State minister for Sports Peter Ogwang represented the minister of Education Janet Museveni as the chief guest at the event also graced by the Chinese ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong.
