Peruth Chemutai in the lead during the National Cross country Championships in Tororo recently

Uganda’s Olympic gold medalist, Peruth Chemutai will this Friday take part in the first 2023 season of the Diamond League in Doha, Qatar.

Chemutai faces stiff competition from Kenyan athletes, among them the world record holder in 3000m steeplechase Beatrice Chepkoech, Jackline Chepkoech, and Bahrain’s Yavin Winfred Mutile.

Chemutai who did not secure a ticket to the recently concluded World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia has been training in Kapchorwa for the competitive Diamond League.

Chemutai, says that Doha Diamond League is a good race for her to start the season and the Budapest World Championships qualification window.

“I want to use this race as a motivational mark for the World Championships,” she said, adding, “Looking at the entry list of the competitors, I will be able to gauge my preparations and if all goes well, I would like to break my own national record of 9:01.45 seconds.”

Addy Ruiter, Chemutai’s training coach, notes that the training program emphasized speed and speed endurance, with the aim of optimizing the athlete’s performance in upcoming track competitions just as for his counterpart Joshua Cheptegei.
