A plea to return KCCA’s old guard

KCCA parted ways with former coach Sergio Traguil

The current state of affairs at KCCA FC is nothing short of deplorable.

The once formidable team is grappling with low morale, compounded by a streak of four straight league defeats. For fans of the beautiful game, witnessing KCCA FC languish in such dire straits is a bitter pill to swallow. While my allegiance lies with Villa, a competitive spirit is what fuels the fire of football rivalries.

The present plight of KCCA leaves me genuinely saddened. KCCA, along with Express FC, has historically been Villa’s adversary on the pitch. Incidentally, as a devoted Villa supporter, I find myself yearning for a resurgent KCCA. True competition among these football giants is the platform where legends are made.

The current tribulations at KCCA FC contrast with a not-so-distant past when the club, under the stewardship of former KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi, Julius Kabugo, Aggrey Ashaba and Ali Mulyanyama created vibrancy.

In that era less than a decade ago, Musisi, with her managerial acumen, afforded Kabugo the autonomy to oversee the club’s affairs as the board chairman. Similarly, Kabugo delegated technical matters to Ashaba and this division of roles contributed to the club’s success.

Regrettably, KCCA has never been the same since their departure. The void left by these football visionaries has been filled by novices with limited understanding of the intricacies required to steer a club toward silverware.

It is disheartening to learn that KCCA’s current leadership lacks the strategic prowess demonstrated by the old guard. In contrast to the past, where responsibilities were clearly spread out, today’s board seems to micromanage every aspect of the club.

I’m told that several players are now reporting directly to board members, circumventing established structures within the club. In such a murky environment, the blame for KCCA’s poor form cannot be solely laid at the feet of coach Sergio Traguil. The system is broken.

Football, at its core, is about results, not promises. Building a successful team requires a fine understanding of what happens behind the curtains. The old guard had mastered the delicate art of separating powers, each member contributing to the overall success of the club. In stark contrast, the current management seems to grapple with these fundamentals.

The time has come for KCCA FC to reassess its trajectory and consider a U-turn toward the strategies that once breathed life into the club. The old guard is still around. Their expertise and experience could prove invaluable in revitalizing KCCA and restoring it to its former glory.

As a concerned football enthusiast, I implore the club to reflect on its current state and seriously contemplate bringing back the architects of its past successes. The sooner this decision is made, the better the chances of KCCA FC reclaiming its position as a football powerhouse in Ugandan football.
