MTN Uganda Commends UN Women for Advancing Women’s Economic Participation

KAMPALA, Uganda — MTN Uganda is commending the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) for its efforts to promote women’s empowerment in Uganda.
Sharon Nyaika, MTN Uganda’s senior manager for supply chain logistics, met with Dr. Paulina Chiwangu, UN Women’s representative in Uganda, to discuss the success of the Advancing Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) initiative.
The program, launched in partnership with UN Women, aims to integrate more women into MTN’s supply chain. Since its inception, the number of women suppliers has increased from 3% to 14%.
“We appreciate UN Women’s support in equipping women entrepreneurs with necessary skills and opportunities to thrive in business,” Nyaika said.
Dr. Chiwangu acknowledged the progress made in women’s empowerment, emphasizing the importance of continued partnerships.
“Despite the gains, women in Uganda still face significant challenges, including gender-based violence and economic disparities,” Dr. Chiwangu said.
MTN Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to working with UN Women and other stakeholders to strengthen initiatives that uplift women economically. Future collaborations will focus on capacity-building programs, mentorship initiatives and expanded access to markets for women entrepreneurs.
