18 arrested in Mbale for smoking shisha

The Friday crackdown netted 18 people

At least 18 people were on Friday arrested by police in Mbale for allegedly smoking shisha.

Elgon region police community liaison officer Zainabu Namuyindi says they targeted individuals smoking shisha at various nightclubs, including Club Elitajia, Pear Bars, and Rooftop, among others.

Namuyindi stated that the use of illicit drugs such as cannabis and public smoking of cigarettes and tobacco is illegal which prompted the crackdown. She revealed that the arrested individuals include five women and 13 men, all currently detained at Mbale central police station awaiting prosecution.

She said these actions are part of ongoing efforts to curb drug-related activities and ensure public safety. Moses Mugonyi, the health director of Mbale city, highlighted the detrimental effects of smoking shisha and similar substances.

He noted that these drugs impair the brain, potentially leading to crimes such as rape as well as causing lung cancer. Mugonyi emphasized that the crackdown will continue until Mbale city is free from shisha smoking.
